Bauer Media’s commitment to corporate social responsibility is no more apparent than through the work and community initiatives delivered by our local radio portfolio, each of which operates its own independently registered charity.
The Cash for Kids charities are established to channel the caring of the local community into the welfare of their own youngsters.
We use the power of our radio brands to deliver initiatives for sick and underprivileged children in our communities; tapping into listener support for their local area, to benefit local children and give the neediest a better and brighter future.
With cash raised locally and spent locally, each charity guarantees that listeners’ generous donations go to bring hope, healing or happiness to a child in their local community.
Collectively we raised in excess of £5.8 million in 2009.
Example Campaigns
Radiothon
Radio Forth delivered the first ever UK based Radiothon raising £90,000 over a 3 day on-air campaign for the Sick Kids Foundation at Edinburgh Children’s Hospital. Plans are underway to repeat the project in other areas linking up with local hospitals throughout 2009
Owen McGurry
Owen has cerebral palsy and has been unable to speak since birth, he is now 11 years old and although he can’t walk and needs specialist care around the clock he is a bright and happy boy. Owen's parent’s contacted TFM radio’s Cash for Kids charity for help to provide a computer aided speech machine.
Mytobi is the computer needed, but is not provided on the NHS or by Social Services for children with cerebral palsey. We managed to raise enough, when added to the funds raised by Owen's parents, to get the much needed equipment.
Owen is currently mastering the computer and his first words read live on air were…….. "THANK YOU – I LOVE YOU MAM AND DAD"
Christmas appeals
The Christmas period delivers approximately 50% of our annual income and in 2009 we collected over £2.5 million in toys and cash and helped over 157,000 children in local communities across the UK
Much of the campaign concentrates on the ‘Secret Santa’ appeal where listeners are asked to donate a gift to a child unwrapped and boxed to a variety of collecting points throughout each transmission area. Local social services and agencies identify the needy children, many of whom are in care homes and refuges and who would otherwise receive nothing on Christmas Day.
All children remain anonymous although many letters of thanks are received post Christmas from homes and Social services
Conclusion
- We uses the power of our radio brands to communicate and engage with audiences
- Every penny of funds raised stays in the local community
- Working together we can deliver virtually nationwide coverage with local delivery right to the heart of the community
- Many of our charities have been established for over 30 years and are trusted within the local communities
- Because we operate across the UK at a very ’grass routes’ local level we are able to direct funds more efficiently and quickly
