Magic 105.4’s Neil Fox is London’s Undisputed Number One Commercial Breakfast Show

Magic 105.4 Celebrates a Record Six in a Row at Number One

Magic 105.4’s Neil Fox was today crowned London’s undisputed King of Breakfast - for the first time in his 22-year career.

Neil has more listeners than any other commercial radio breakfast show and he is number one across all possible measures of reach, hours and share. Every week 868,000 people tune in to hear Neil’s ‘more music, less talk’ breakfast show, adding an extra 37,000 fans over the last three months giving him a 5.7 per cent share of listening in the capital.

Neil said: “Ever since the first day I walked in to a radio studio, it has been my dream to be number one in London and that dream has now come true. When I joined Magic less than three years ago, we had the number one spot in our sights and it is genuinely amazing to have achieved that goal. Nothing can beat this feeling - quite simply it really is Magic.”

Neil’s number one triumph comes hot on the heels of being presented with a special Gold Award for outstanding contribution to Radio at this month’s 2008 Arqiva Commercial Radio Awards where the judges praised Neil for his “warmth, approachability and gentle humour". Magic 105.4 won station of the year.

Neil’s success at breakfast is shared by the station with Magic 105.4 celebrating “six of the best” with a record-breaking six consecutive Rajars as the number one commercial station in London.

Breaking through the 2 million listener mark (2,005,000) for only the second time in its history, Magic 105.4 has a clear lead of 231,000 ahead of its nearest commercial competitor with gains in reach, share and hours on both the quarter and the year. Magic 105.4 accounts for 7.4 per cent of all London listening – its highest ever share.

Also in London, Kiss 100 continues to superserve the commercially crucial younger audiences. Kiss 100 is the number one station for 15-34s in London.

Every week 1,414,000 tune in to Kiss 100’s upbeat tunes making it London’s fourth biggest commercial station with a share of 4.7. Rickie and Melvin at Breakfast have 587,000 listeners every week.

The popularity of Magic and Kiss stretches across the country via a network of analogue, DAB, satellite, cable, online and Freeview. Across the UK, the Magic network reaches 3,441,000 listeners and the Kiss network reaches 3,149,000.

Every week, 12,231,000 people tune in to a Bauer Media radio station. Bauer Media has a 10.7 per cent share of all listening and a 25.3 per cent share of commercial listening.

Elsewhere in the group Kerrang! Radio continues to offer the best in guitar music with 1,350,000 listeners across the UK every week including 384,000 listeners to Kerrang! 105.2 in the West Midlands

Locally, Bauer Media connects with 4,642,000 million listeners every week via its Big City Network across the major conurbations of the UK. Across the Big City Network, Bauer Media is commercially number one or two in all 20 of its markets.

During this quarter, the Big City stations benefitted from a £1 million ‘The £1,000 Song – Sound of Money’ marketing campaign which helped towards attracting an additional 134,000 listeners and an additional 786,000 hours across the network.

In a successful quarter for the local stations, some of the highlights included: Clyde 1 taking the number 1 spot across Glasgow and the West of Scotland; Manchester’s Key 103 increasing in reach, hours and share; Radio City in Liverpool adding hours and reach and Cool FM in Northern Ireland notching up its best results since 2004.

Bauer Media leads the way in national radio services available on digital platforms with five of the top 10 most popular digital only stations (by reach) – including the number one station which is The Hits.

Dee Ford, Radio Group MD, Bauer Media, said: “This is a great set of results across the board for Bauer Media, but a special mention has to go to Neil Fox being the undisputed champion of London and undoubtedly the capital’s classiest DJ to wake up to.”
