FHM has won the Best Lifestyle cover at the Maggies Awards. The October 09 cover was a Music Issue, featuring a hot shoot with the girl of the moment - Pixie Lott fresh off her debut number one. Having secured the right headliner, the task in post-production was to bring the issue to vivid life. For this, FHM used CG animation to transform the entire cover into a huge amp. The key was detail: the logo was brushed brass, the use of the Marshall font, knobs that go up to 11 and the spraypainted coverlines.

“We owe everything to Pixie – in the 10 months since we shot her for the cover she has proved herself to be the real deal, a British Britney without the car crash of a personal life. She’s a true cover star. Thanks also to the man who built the massive amp – which is now on eBay (not really, he did it on a computer). Mostly, our thanks go to everyone who voted – we’ll see you next year."

The Pixie Lott issue, Colin’s first, was a daring re-invention for an FHM cover. It brilliantly demonstrated FHM’s Funny, Sexy and Useful brand values and heralded the way for subsequent milestone issues such as The Comedy Issue starring Joanna Page, and the current Kelly Brook 'Three Lions' cover - surely a contender for a Maggie in 2010. In all, 135 covers were nominated for a Maggie in eight categories. In the end, only five magazines per category made it through to the shortlist that was put forward for public vote. Other covers nominated in the lifestyle category were heat (Pete bears all) and EMPIRE (Avatar).
