Julian Linley Appointed Creative Director

Julian Linley, Editor of heat magazine, has been appointed to the brand new role of Creative Director – Lifestyle and Entertainment. As Creative Director, Julian will assume the key responsibility for the creative growth of Bauer Media’s Lifestyle and Entertainment brands on to broadcast platforms.

In recent years, Bauer Media has successfully produced and co-produced several Bauer-brand-related TV programmes, including 'The Empire Awards' for ITV2, an Empire documentary on Spielberg for Five, a 'Match Academy' series for Five and an FHM series for Sky 1. These shows were all funded by broadcasters and heavily promoted across Bauer brands and platforms. During this time, Bauer Media has co-produced with independent production companies including Endemol, RDF and Monkey.

In 2009, this activity has stepped up significantly with a large increase in interest from broadcasters in Bauer properties. Bauer Media currently has production agreements with Endemol and Prospect Pictures, and projects in development with both companies for major broadcasters. It has also recently developed a production arrangement with TalkbackThames.

In order to build and further grow this activity, Julian has been appointed to drive the creative side of this business and to build on the deals we have in place with several leading production companies.

Julian joined heat in 2000 as Deputy Editor to help re-launch the title. Since being appointed Editor of the magazine in June 08, Julian has led the team and the whole heat brand through a period of record-breaking, cross-platform successes delivering many market-leading exclusives and innovations, including the launch of heatworld magazine in March.

All this resulted in the magazine maintaining market share at the JJ09 ABCs - a period that saw some of its best-selling issues of all time. heatworld.com achieved its highest ever UU of 627k and 13m PIs in July, and in the Q2 2009 RAJARs over 570,000 celebrity-obsessed listeners tuned into heat Radio - its highest ever listening figures.

Over the last twelve months, Julian has also been working on several projects with the highest-calibre names in the broadcast industry and his immediate focus will be to bring these existing projects to fruition, including:

  • ‘Project Tower’: Developed over the last 12 months in association with Endemol, Julian has driven this idea to the point where we now have a firm offer on the table from a major broadcaster.
  • ‘Project Jackpot’: Pilot programme in production, anchored around one of our key brands.

David Davies, Managing Director of Bauer Media’s Women’s Lifestyle and Entertainment brands, commented:

“We have reached the point where there is clearly an opportunity for us to extend our brands on to television through co-production deals with some of the very best production companies. To see these through to broadcast it is clear that we now need to dedicate top quality creative resource. Julian was the obvious choice.”

Julian Linley, added:  “I am hugely excited to be taking on this new role and look forward to both nurturing creativity and delivering effective brand extensions and industry partnerships. heat is the best media brand in the UK, bar none and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time leading the talented editorial, programming and web teams over the last eight years. Stepping out of the day-to-day role, while still delivering new initiatives across all Lifestyle and Entertainment brands is the best of both worlds.”

Until a successor as Editor of heat is announced, deputy editor Jeremy Mark will step up to edit the magazine and oversee heatworld.com.
