New Director of Music
Bauer Media Group has announced a significant investment in the music output of its local radio stations through the appointment of Gary Stein as Director of Music.
In this new role, Stein will manage the whole musical output across the 16 northern English and Scottish Place radio stations. Music provision for Bauer’s London stations is unaffected, and will continue to be managed by Christian Smith and Sheena Mason, Heads of Music for Kiss and Magic 105.4 respectively; however Stein will work with both to ensure synergy across the Group.
This investment reflects Bauer’s drive to continue to grow listening through ensuring musical excellence across every station - the right songs at the right time in the right markets to delight listeners and build loyalty. Music and listener insight will be strong tools used to ensure that Bauer continually understands the role music plays in audience’s lives.
Stein will also work closely with Ric Blaxill, Bauer’s cross-platform Music & Content Director, to build on the fantastic relationship the media owner already has with music labels. Blaxill will continue to be the label entry point into Bauer Media Group for big network artist projects, securing major acts appearing at big Bauer events, as well as managing Bauer’s digital portfolio of stations including The Hits and heat radio.
Stein has worked at Bauer Media for seventeen years, most recently as Station and Programme Director for Key 103 and Magic 1152 AM. He has worked at several of the flagship Place Portfolio brands including Radio Clyde, Northsound Radio and Hallam FM. Throughout this time he has played an integral role in creating strong station identities throughout the Place Portfolio, and has been rewarded with accolades such as the Arqiva UK Programmer of the Year in 2011. He was also at Key 103 when the station won UK Station of the Year Award in 2008 – the first time the station has ever achieved this honour. Stein’s replacement at Key 103 will be confirmed shortly.
The Bauer Place Portfolio reaches 8.6 million adults each week across the UK (Rajar Q3 2012).
Dee Ford, MD, Bauer Radio said: “This transformational new role has been created to ensure that Bauer continues to punch above its weight with listener loyalty by providing the best quality music and an even better listening experience for our audiences across our Place stations. Gary will be bringing a wealth of consumer and music experience to the job, he is a passionate radio programmer who understands the opportunity in delighting listeners.’’
