Ian Betteridge

Tell us a bit about you:
I left school at 16 and 12 years later got my first job in journalism – and 25 years on I’m still working in the industry I love. I’m passionate about three things: helping people get the kind of career opportunities I took for granted; rugby; and Derby County Football Club (don’t mention Wayne Rooney).

What does your role entail?
I’m responsible for running our digital content, SEO and social media teams across all our publishing brands, from Heat and Closer to Motorcycle News and Today’s Golfer. That means I spend a lot of time working with a large team of very creative people, helping them develop their careers and skills – at least when I’m not head down in a spreadsheet working on budgets!

Tell us a bit about how you came to join Bauer Media?
Born and bred in Derby (did I mention Derby County?) I worked in all kinds of jobs before I started in publishing, from fixing computers to moving boxes around a warehouse. I found I had a passion for journalism, and ended up working as a reporter, then editor. I joined Bauer nearly three years ago because of two things: the amazing people that I’d already met here, and the fantastic brands that had the chance to work with. It’s not every job that you get to talk about the latest make up trend one day, and Cal Crutchlow’s performance in MotoGP the next.

What does a typical day look like for you?
My role is really all about people, which means a lot of meetings! But I love it – there’s nothing better for me than sitting down and working through a problem with someone, helping them to achieve more for themselves and Bauer. A typical day might involve sitting down with one of the print managing directors to update on website performance, or it might be a session with an editor going through a development plan for one of their team. It’s pretty rare that I spend a lot of time at my desk, typing documents.

Why do you love working at Bauer?
Because Bauer is a global business I get to work with teams in Germany, Australia, New Zealand, the US and Poland, which is brilliant. It’s also a company that genuinely believes in developing people and helping them make a difference, and the opportunities for learning and development are great. I’m currently doing an MSc in Senior Leadership through Bauer, and loving it – which just shows that even at my level, the company is still committed to helping you develop your skills.

What are you proudest of in your time at Bauer?
The thing that I’m most proud of is the growth in our lifestyle brands, which have more than doubled in traffic since I first started. It’s a huge achievement and one that I and my teams are very proud of.

What advice would you give to anyone looking to join Bauer?
The most important thing is just to apply – don't think that you’re not ready to work at a company this big, or that you won’t have a chance. Beyond that, make sure you do your homework on the brands themselves – you’d be surprised how often candidates come in who haven’t really even looked at what they’re applying to work on.
