Line of Duty and EastEnders are double winners as Lorraine Kelly gets a Gold Award at TV Choice Awards 2019

Some of TV’s favourite stars took to the red carpet at The Hilton on Park Lane on Monday 9th September evening for the event that’s become a highlight of the showbiz calendar. The TV Choice Awards 2019 celebrated the best of the last twelve months in TV. And the glitzy ceremony saw some of Britain’s biggest celebrity names scoop the coveted trophies, as voted for by the British viewing public.
The 23rd annual event has honoured TV’s best stars and shows, but the night heralded a TV Choice debut for our sparkling host, comedy star Katherine Ryan.
Lorraine Kelly stayed up late so that we could present her with a gold award, to honour her outstanding achievement of 35 years on daytime TV, with the trophy handed over by her irrepressible ITV colleague, Piers Morgan.
Meanwhile, for a number of TV favourites th meant another TV Choice award for the trophy cabinet, as Call The Midwife, I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here!, DIY SOS and This Morning added to their haul. However, there were also new winners celebrating success, including our Best Food Show Gordon, Gino And Fred: Road Trip and Ricky Gervais’s comedy After Life which landed Netflix its first TV Choice Awards victory in the Best Comedy category.
Meanwhile, our readers showed how environmental issues remain a major issue, by awarding our Best Factual prize to Blue Planet Live, following on from Blue Planet’s win in 2018.
There’s always a tough battle in the drama categories, and it’s fair to say that writer Jed Mercurio cleaned up. His Line of Duty won Best Drama for series five, while the cop drama’s Adrian Dunbar was named Best Actor. Jed also triumphed with Best New Drama, as the trophy went to his much talked-about Bodyguard. Meanwhile Jodie Comer added another prize to her tally as Best Actress for Killing Eve.
In the soap categories, EastEnders took the double for Best Soap Actor and Best Soap Newcomer, while Coronation Street nabbed the Best Soap Actress gong and Emmerdale took the final award of the night for Best Soap.
