Make Your New Year’s Resolution to ‘Be Healthy, Be Happy’ With Scala Radio

Scala Radio is starting the new year with a programme of special features that focus on different ways to boost wellbeing over the year ahead.

Be Healthy, Be Happy is a series of short features that delve into the restorative qualities of classical music. Broadcasting across the weekday schedule throughout January, each feature will offer informative and insightful tips for activities that can boost mental and physical wellbeing.

This year, radio has especially demonstrated its role as a dependable companion for listeners. When the world has seemed so unsettled, radio has been a source of comfort and familiarity in peoples’ homes, providing entertainment and a much-needed sense of stability.

Through the Be Healthy, Be Happy programmes, Scala aims to guide listeners to a more serene start to 2021, offering small and simple ideas on how to feel more inwardly present and connected with nature. With guest contributors including bestselling author and TV chef, Lorraine Pascale; practising NHS GP and mental wellbeing campaigner, Dr. Radha Modgil; writer, coach and yoga instructor, Donna Noble; Garden News magazine’s Editor at Large, Ian Hodgson; plus writer, photographer and urban nature enthusiast, David Lindo.

Kicking off with a new Sunday special series, Lorraine Pascale will celebrate cooking and classical music on Sunday evenings from 6-8pm. Her new 5-part series, Composed in the Kitchen, will explore how to create a positive cooking experience with a focus on tips for beginners, guilt-free comfort dishes and how our diet can affect our physical and mental wellbeing – all alongside a delicious soundtrack of classical favourites and new discoveries. See below for the full schedule.

Yoga teacher and original co-creator of Noire Fit Fest, Britain’s first black fitness festival, Donna Noble will present short features explaining key yoga practises and postures for listeners of all abilities. She will also share her favourite breathing and wellbeing techniques in the short, bitesize features to help listeners eliminate stress, feel more in control and transform their approach to life by learning to ‘go with the flow’.

The coronavirus restrictions led to a huge rise in green-fingered enthusiasts and Ian Hodgson, Editor at Large of Garden News magazine, will join Scala to offer tips on how to keep gardens, house plants and window boxes in the best health and how, in turn, you can improve your health and wellbeing. Exploring his special interests, including landscape design, the creative uses of plants and unusual edibles, Ian will be sharing best practices and ideas that can be applied to any sized outdoor or indoor space.

Broadcaster and writer, David Lindo, also known as The Urban Birder, will be encouraging listeners to step outside and “#LookUp!” at the wonders of the sky. Sharing his passion for all things nature, he will offer advice on how embracing the sounds, sights and ambience of wildlife in an urban environment can boost everyday wellbeing, plus some top tips for those wanting to start birdwatching. Early-risers can also start the day with regular show, In The Park, to enjoy a carefully crafted blend of atmospheric sounds of nature and birdsong alongside calming music at 5am.

As well as being a practising GP for the NHS, Dr. Radha is also a campaigner for physical and mental wellbeing, educating people on how to stay healthy in a relatable and engaging way. She will be offering Scala listeners her expertise as she explores the fascinating relationship between classical music and mental health, while discussing topics such as self-kindness, loneliness and anxiety and offering tips and suggestions to support mental health.

Speaking about the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle balance, Dr Radha shared, “The last year has been full of crisis, change and challenge. Normally, we would have space and time to recover between events such as these but when we don’t, we can feel mentally and emotionally exhausted and overwhelmed. And that is when things tip out of balance. Scala’s Be Happy, Be Healthy features will encourage people to check-in on themselves daily. The tips and activity ideas will help them to understand how a New Year’s intention to make even one small change to their daily lives can really make a difference to how they feel and to their wellbeing, lasting way beyond 2021.”

Listeners can also enjoy the wellbeing benefits of other regular programmes across Scala. Every Thursday from 11.30am, Simon Mayo speaks to an author in the Scala Radio Book Club as they delve deeper into the pages of a new book. Every Wednesday at 4.30pm, Mark Forrest chats to Nick Hallissey, Deputy Editor of Country Walking magazine, about the benefits of regular walks and fresh air. Plus the Mindfulness Music features with Sam Hughes on Monday to Friday 2.15pm and Hannah Cox Monday to Thursdays 9.15pm encourage listeners to take a moment out of their day or evening.
