UK Garage Pioneer DJ Spoony brings Classical Garage to Scala Radio

UK garage pioneer, DJ Spoony is set to join a line-up of critically acclaimed presenters on Scala Radio for a brand new show, Spoony’s Classical Garage.

Starting on 9th June, the four-part series will explore the trailblazing DJ’s passions for classical music in Sport, Film and TV as he plays an eclectic range of artists including Beethoven, Wookie, Vivaldi and Twister. The radio show will also showcase exclusive cuts from the DJ’s upcoming Garage Classical studio album, which is due for release this September via Since ‘93 / Sony.

Garage Classical has already developed a cult following two iconic sold-out live shows at London’s Barbican and Eventim Apollo. An explosive live show which combines Garage music with a 36 piece orchestra to bring stunning classical renditions of popular garage tracks, the events have seen the original Dreem Teem member joined by special guests including Ms Dynamite, Mike Skinner and So Solid Crew.

Now set for its third instalment at the prestigious Royal Albert Hall later this year, the popularity of Garage Classical grows with the studio album set to be previewed first on Scala Radio. Listen out for reworked classics from DJ Spoony and acclaimed composer and conductor Katie Chatburn, who with the esteemed Ignition Orchestra will take you on an intricate journey through one of music’s most timeless genres, exploring the rich tapestry of sounds that defined this era.

DJ Spoony commented, “The success of last year’s live performances highlights how classical music is now on the radar of the mainstream. Live orchestral renditions of Garage, Rock, Pop and even Metal music are getting the genre in front of a younger, more diverse crowd who are inspired to stop, listen and think about classical music in a new way. After so many years behind the deck playing Garage classics I’m excited to bring Classical Garage to a whole new audience on Scala Radio.”

When asked about signing DJ Spoony, Scala’s Music and Content Director, Ric Blaxill said, “The way DJ Spoony has successfully blended two genres of music together shows just how much of a pioneering musician, DJ and broadcaster he is. His orchestra is young and diverse, just like the crowds that pack out his live concerts and Scala Radio gives him the platform to inspire a new audience of music fans to experiment with genres and create something engaging and relevant to modern life.”

Widely regarded as one of the founding fathers of UK Garage, DJ Spoony has been professionally DJing worldwide for over 20 years, both solo and as part of the Dreem Teem, who performed with double MOBO Award winner Kele Le Roc

2019 marked the biggest launch in UK classical music in nearly 30 years as Scala Radio broke the mould and brought the genre into the 21st century. DJ Spoony joins a line-up of presenters including the likes of Simon Mayo and Angellica Bell and musical innovators Goldie and William Orbit who launched the station with special series earlier this year.

DJ Spoony’s top 5 classical tracks are:

  • Quincy Jones & His Orchestra – Soul Bossa Nova
  • Henry Mancini – The Pink Panther
  • Mozart – Serenade No 13 in G Major
  • William Grant Still – Symphony No 4
  • Ravel – Bolero

DJ Spoony’s top 5 classical garage tunes are:

  • Amira – My Desire (Dreem Teem Remix)
  • Roy Davis Jr. – Gabriel (Live garage mix)
  • Shaun Escoffery – Days Like This (DJ Spinna remix)
  • Artful Dodger – Woman Trouble
  • Wookie feat Lain – Live On

Spoony’s Classical Garage will air Sundays 1-3pm, from 9th June to 30th June with a 7pm repeat on Tuesday evening.

Garage Classical will take place at London’s Royal Albert Hall on October 24th – tickets on sale now. Pre-order the new Garage Classical Live album due for release on September 6th via Since ’93 / Sony Music.
