TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOU:
The best way to describe myself is as a Creative. Being a creative has led me down many different paths in my life, from focussing on drama in my teens and wanting to go to The Brits school (I made the waiting list the second time I auditioned) to making handmade cards for my friends at school and starting up my own business. Then I went to university and studied Media and Communications, I thought I wanted to be a film maker. At the time I was really into writing and producing my own short films and it brought me so much joy to see it go from paper to screen.
After Uni I went into retail, because getting a job in media is probably the hardest thing I’ve experienced. I know how hard it is to just get your foot in the door. Then I was introduced to an amazing scheme which shone a light on creatives and other professionals like me which in turn led to my first job in media! Hurrah! I started off as in Office Intern and now I’m a Video and Content producer for Magic Radio.
Alongside my day job I’m the founder of The Fempire Collective, a community for females entrepreneurs from minority ethnic backgrounds to network and also Tribal Unicorn Candles, as sassy lifestyle brand.
WHAT DOES YOUR ROLE ENTAIL?
I make social media content for magic radio, so that can be anything from videos to stills, alongside my team I create these assets from scratch to entertain and engage our audiences online.
TELL US A BIT ABOUT HOW YOU CAME TO JOIN BAUER MEDIA?
I applied for the job after a few years at my previous job at Somethin Else, an indie media company in the UK. My first role as an Office Runner was advertised through an organisation called Creative Access. Creative Access was an organisation aimed to give professionals from minority ethnic backgrounds the opportunity to apply for early and senior stage careers at big corporation companies.
After my internship I was kept on at Somethin Else and became a Branded Content Co-ordinator, working for clients such as Topman, BBC, Oxfam and more. After 2 years I applied for a job as a Commercial Social Media Production Manager at Bauer Media and got the job! I spent another two years learning the ins and out of social media in the corporate commercial world. I worked on a range of campaigns with Tresemme, No7, Sky Cinema, Cancer Research and more! I then applied for a job on Magic Radio and have enjoyed being a part of the Magic Radio team ever since.
WHAT DOES A TYPICAL DAY LOOK LIKE FOR YOU?
Every day we have a team meeting, discussing our plans for the day, what’s coming up and what projects we’ll be working on. We then monitor our social accounts, create the relevant social media assets and I would mainly work on any video assets that need to be created that day. Every day brings something different to work on and I absolutely love that!
WHY DO YOU LOVE WORKING AT BAUER?
I love radio and I love social media. I didn’t realise there was a role out there that could combine the two until I saw the job ad. Working at Bauer has allowed me to exercise my creative skills and still learn something new every day. To add to that I get to work with one of my favourite radio stations and listen to music I love at the same time.
The people and culture at Bauer really makes this workplace stand out for me. It’s the team that I work with that make me excited to get up every morning and create.
WHAT ARE YOU PROUDEST OF IN YOUR TIME AT BAUER?
Joining the Diversity and Inclusion team at Bauer is probably one of my proudest moments. Knowing that you are a part of making real change, change that will benefit your colleagues and those who come after you is a feeling I can’t even explain.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ANYONE LOOKING TO JOIN BAUER?
Never doubt your skills. Everything I had achieved on my CV wasn’t though big corporations, it was through hobbies, personal projects and things I loved doing every day. The skills we learn outside of a workplace are just as valuable as the ones learnt within.
Believe in yourself and the things you are passionate about and that is all you need to succeed.
