Liam and Noel who? Pulp take top spot in new Britpop Anthem Chart

Absolute Radio have brought an epic Britpop summer to a close today with the announcement of the Ultimate Britpop Anthem as chosen by their listeners.

Whilst it may have been Oasis hogging all the headlines this year, the Gallagher brothers have failed to top the Absolute Radio chart with Pulp’s Common People taking top spot. In fact, Pulp have taken not one but two spaces in the top five with Disco 2000 at number five.

Oasis were at number four with Live Forever, whilst support act Verve were at number two with Bittersweet Symphony. Blur rounded out the top of the chart at number three with Parklife.

The countdown began on Absolute Radio at 9am this morning with Ben Burrell before Richie Firth announced the number one just before 6pm.

Richie said: ‘This result shows the enduring quality of a song which was released 30 years ago but which still sounds as fresh today. Seeing crowds of all ages sing it live on Pulp’s recent tour demonstrates why it is now officially the greatest Britpop anthem of all-time.

The full Top Ten as voted by Absolute Radio listeners:

Pulp – Common People
Verve – Bittersweet Symphony
