Tea Break Tour with Kat Shoob

Tea Break Tour is all about the people behind our brands. Every show, every story and every connection with our audiences starts with a person and this series is a chance to pause, put the kettle on and recognise the talent and creativity that brings Bauer to life. From audio and publishing to teams across the wider business, Tea Break Tour celebrates the personalities you hear, read and see every day, sharing the stories and moments you don’t always get when the mic is live or the day gets busy.

Kat Shoob takes on the Tea Break Tour! We caught up with Kat from Magic Radio’s Home Time show for a Tea Break Tour – although it turns out it wasn’t actually tea! Over a (questionable-coloured) coffee, Kat told us about working with her co-presenter Tom Price, life behind the mic and her proudest moments on air.

First off, how do you take your tea?
I don’t like tea. It’s coffee but it’s a questionable colour.

Can you describe the Home Time show on Magic in three words?
Officially, I would describe it as calm, warm and inclusive. Unofficially, I would describe it as a bit silly.

What’s it like working with your co-host Tom Price every day?
Very fun. We both bring in lots of snacks. He’s a very funny man – I know you wouldn’t know it but he’s a very funny man, so we have lots of laughs. Me and Tom always wanted to work together. We’d worked together before and then when we got here we spoke to the boss and we were like, “Can we have a show together?” and it didn’t happen immediately – took a little bit of time and then a couple of years later we got our show together and the rest is history.

What’s one thing people might be surprised to hear happens when the mic’s down?
Me and Tom take it in turns every day to drive the desk, to be in charge of playing the tunes. There’s lots of crisps. We’re always having a little gossip. We’re always having a laugh.
Lots of other presenters drop in to see us – people from Absolute, people from KISS – it’s like an open door. Although it’s not open door because we’re live on air but there’s always someone sat in the seat in between the songs having a chat, telling us about what’s going on in their lives, which we love.

It’s like the Magic party! Who’s better at driving the desk?
Oh, me of course! I’ve got a fader finger.

You’ve interviewed so many people, is there a standout guest?
We had the Grinch on the show as a guest, which was as chaotic as you can imagine. Do not invite him on the show. It doesn’t work.

Is there anyone you’d love to have join you on the show?
I would love to have someone like Jennifer Saunders join us on the show or Joanna Lumley.
Actually, I bumped into Joanna Lumley because there’s always someone hanging about in these corridors. She told us this mad story about the Underground and how she used to have a flat nearby – she was just being gorgeous. I had to get back on air and I knew the song was running out but I just wanted to stay with Joanna Lumley.

We all would like to stay with Joanna Lumley! What’s been the funniest moment on air?
It’s always silly moments where little noises in the studio happen. Or sometimes you might accidentally – it happens quite a lot – when you’re going into talking on the radio, you smack yourself in the face with the headphones. I don’t know why radio presenters can’t work out how to put their own headphones on, but it happens quite a lot.

What’s been your proudest moment so far?
Because of the time that we’re on, from 4pm, a lot of my friends listen in the car with their children. So that’s always really lovely that my mates’ kids get to hear me.
I’ve had two babies since I’ve been at Magic and my eldest baby, who’s four, he listens to me on the radio too. So that’s a really proud moment.

Is there anything exciting coming up?
We’ve got loads of exciting stuff coming up this year. We were even planning at the end of last year things that we were going to do this year. So keep watching, because there’s going to be lots of things happening off and on the show. You’ll have to wait and see, I’m afraid.

Finally,  what’s the perfect tea break snack?
Jammy Dodgers!
