Magic Radio celebrates the legacies of our favourite Boybands and Girlbands with special season

–         Star names sharing their Perfect Playlists include Spice Girl Melanie C,
JLS’ JB Gill, Kimberly Walsh from Girls Aloud, Blue and the Pussycat Dolls

–         Plus, a run of brand new and exclusive documentaries on Wham!, the Spice Girls and the phenomenon of boyband fandom

As loads of the greatest pop bands from the 90s and 00s hit the road for gigs,  Magic Radio is celebrating the pop groups that defined generations with a special Boyband/Girlband Summer – a feel-good season spotlighting the artists, fans and cultural moments behind some of music’s most iconic bands.

From devoted fan communities and chart-topping hits to iconic reunions, break-ups, comeback tours and cultural milestones, Magic Radio celebrates the groups that made millions sing, scream, dance – and occasionally cover their bedroom walls in posters. No judgement. We were all there.

Running from May Bank Holiday weekend and throughout June, will be a line-up of exclusive Perfect Playlists from some of the biggest names in pop, brand new documentaries, and the chance for listeners to win their way in to some of the biggest gigs of the summer including Boyzone at the Emirates and tickets for the Take That tour.

The season begins on Bank Holiday Monday (May 25th) with a Bank Holiday Boyband Day  celebrating the very best music from the very best boybands including Take That, Boyzone, Bros, New Kids on the Block and more.

Then, on Friday May 29th at 7pm, Lee, Antony, Simon and Duncan – aka Blue – will be joining Magic Radio to kick off a run of Perfect Playlists. Melanie C, Boyzone, JB Gill, Kimberly Walsh and the Pussycat Dolls will all be hosting special Friday night shows. Expect a nostalgic journey through the music, memories and moments that made these boybands and girlbands a permanent part of pop culture.

Elsewhere across June and July will be a series of new documentaries including:

Brosettes to Blockheads – By the Fans: Hear stories of tattoos, cancelled family holidays and occasional heartbreak! Real life tales from through the years featuring fans of Bros, New Kids On The Block, Take That, Westlife and more.

Road to the Emirates – Boyzone: Boyzone return to the stage one last time at the Emirates Stadium, carrying with them decades of memories.  We’ll trace that journey, not just through the music, but through the moments that shaped it, the people who built it, and the legacy that still lingers in every note.

Wham!: A 40 Year Legacy: Kate Thornton speaks exclusively to Andrew Ridgeley taking him back four decades to the time when Wham stepped on to the stage at Wembley and took their final bow. This hour special looks at the months that lead up that moment on stage in front of 72,000 people.
Independent Women : The Girlband Story :  A celebration of the girl groups who shaped our lives, soundtracked our youth, and redefined what it meant to be a pop fan. Told through the voices of the women who lived it and the fans who loved them.

30 Years of Girl Power: How the Spice Girls Changed the World – with Nicki Chapman Three decades ago, a new girl band shot to number one with their first single, Wannabe. Nicki Chapman, who worked with the Spice Girls in the 90s, celebrates this milestone anniversary talking to female artists like Natalie Imbruglia, Fleur East and Perrie to find out how girl power influenced them.

Paul Sylvester, Magic Radio Content Director, said:
“Boybands and girlbands have given us some of the most memorable songs, performances and pop culture moments of the last 40 years. This summer, Magic Radio is celebrating that legacy with a summer of amazing shows, ticket giveaways and documentaries that are full of nostalgia, emotion, brilliant music and the fans who helped make these groups iconic.”

All of the Perfect Playlists and documentaries will be available through the Rayo app and across Magic Radio throughout the summer.
